Lottery Commission delays hearing on Sanborn casino license

(Concord).- A hearing over whether to revoke the casino license of former state Sen. Andy Sanborn after fraud allegations by the Attorney General’s Office has been delayed by 10 days, according to the New Hampshire Lottery Commission.
The hearing, set for Tuesday, Oct. 3, will instead be held Friday, Oct. 13, a spokesman for the commission said Friday, after the commission granted a 10-day continuance. The exact location and time will be announced later, the spokesman said.
Sanborn has been accused by the Lottery Commission and Attorney General’s Office of fraudulently receiving $844,000 in federal pandemic assistance despite not being eligible as a casino owner. The Attorney General’s Office said in late August that an investigation found that Sanborn had used that money in part to buy three vintage race cars and to prepay rent for 27 years.
The Lottery Commission has moved to take away Sanborn’s charitable gaming license, arguing that the allegations mean he is not “not suitable to be associated with charitable gaming in New Hampshire.” The former Republican senator from Bedford owns a casino in Concord adjacent to his bar, The Draft, and was recently approved by Concord officials to build a second casino in the city.
The Attorney General’s Office has also referred the case to the United States Attorney’s Office for potential criminal charges, and has opened its own criminal case.
Sanborn had appealed the decision to revoke his charitable gaming license. Tuesday’s meeting was supposed to include a hearing on that appeal. The Lottery Commission did not give a reason for the 10-day delay.
